FULL JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Safeguarding Advisor to join our dynamic, multidisciplinary team at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) – one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals. This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of children and young people with complex health needs, within a nationally and internationally renowned specialist paediatric setting.
Working within a skill-mixed team that includes nurses, social workers, family support officers, doctors, and safeguarding professionals, you will play a pivotal role in promoting the safety and wellbeing of our patients. The post holder will support staff across the hospital to identify, assess, and respond to safeguarding concerns, and ensure robust safeguarding processes are embedded in all aspects of care.
You will provide expert advice, case consultation, supervision, and training to clinical and non-clinical staff. As part of your role, you will contribute to multi-agency working, support compliance with statutory guidance and policy, and champion best practice in safeguarding children and young people.
This role requires a strong understanding of child protection legislation, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in high-pressure situations. Your Responsibilities include:
• Providing specialist safeguarding advice, training and supervision across hospital staff.
• Supporting complex case management contributing to Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews.
• Developing robust safeguarding strategies ensuring statutory guidance compliance.
• Delivering high-quality training programmes monitoring effectiveness and uptake.
Work Schedule
37.5 hours weekly with flexible/compressed hours supporting hospital operations.
You Will Have
• Ability to offer safeguarding advice and support to GOSH staff using critical thinking skills, within own sphere of competence. This will include the ability to empower, challenge constructively and provide a learning environment as necessary.
• Able to contribute to developing, delivering and evaluating high quality learning packages.
• Responsive and flexible in meeting the needs of adult learners.
• IT skills including PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Databases.
• Excellent organisational skills.
• Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines, taking responsibility for own time management with tight timeframes and conflicting priorities.
• Ability to promote and demonstrate effective communication at all levels, both written and oral.
• Evidence of ability to challenge the analysis of other constructively.
• Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
• Evidence of experience in safeguarding children practice processes and working with complex child protection issues.
• Experience of contributing to delivering, planning and evaluation of training to groups.
• Experience of collaborative multi-agency working.
• Able to establish positive and effective working relationships with children, young people and families to ascertain their wishes, and engage them in decision making processes.
• Evidence of participation in quality assurance and governance processes in relation to Safeguarding, including undertaking audit and review.
• Ability to identify and willingness to lead on service improvement projects.
• Experience of or willingness to undertake training on sound reflective coaching/models of supervision.
• Knowledge of relevant of evidence-based practice and experience of utilising this in practice.
• In depth knowledge and understanding of current safeguarding children legislation and guidance.
• Awareness of the sensitive nature of safeguarding work; including issues of equal opportunities, confidentiality and information sharing.
Requirements
• RN Children/RSCN, SCPHN (Health Visiting/School Nursing or equivalent) Or • Registered Social Work (Social Work England) Or • Recognises AHP qualification and associated HPCP registration with a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in Paediatrics.
• Post registration education in child protection/safeguarding children module at graduate level or prepared to work towards.
• Evidence of comprehensive and up to date Continuing Professional Development
• Have completed or willingness to undertake Supervision Course
