KeolisAmey Docklands (KAD) is proud to operate the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), serving a vibrant community across East London. We are committed to safety, innovation, and delivering an excellent customer experience — and we invest heavily in developing the next generation of engineering talent.
The Opportunity
Our Engineering Apprenticeship Programme offers a unique opportunity to earn while you learn, gaining hands‑on experience working on one of London’s most iconic transport systems.
We offer both Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeship routes, with programme duration of up to 3 years depending on the level. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers across rolling stock and infrastructure, building real‑world skills while studying towards a nationally recognised engineering qualification. This is an ideal role for someone curious, practical, and keen to start a long‑term career in rail engineering.
Apprenticeships are not just for school leavers — if you have an interest in engineering and are looking for a new career direction, a skills refresh, or a structured pathway into the rail industry, we encourage you to apply.
What You’ll Do
As an Engineering Apprentice, you will:
- Support maintenance and fault diagnosis of DLR rolling stock, infrastructure, and systems
- Assist with planned and reactive engineering activities across mechanical, electrical, and electronic disciplines
- Learn to use diagnostic tools and interpret technical drawings and documentation
- Take part in safety briefings and actively contribute to a strong safety culture
- Rotate through different engineering teams to gain broad experience
- Attend college or training provider sessions as part of your apprenticeship programme
What You’ll Learn
During your apprenticeship, you’ll develop knowledge in:
- Core engineering principles and best practices
- Health, safety, and compliance in a safety-critical environment
- Use of engineering tools, equipment, and software (e.g. CAD, PLCs)
- Fault-finding, problem-solving, and root cause analysis
- Engineering documentation and project lifecycle processes
- Environmental and sustainability considerations
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and Science (Grade 4/C or above)
- A genuine interest in engineering and technology
- Eligibility to undertake an apprenticeship programme
- Willingness to work some shift patterns, including nights and weekends
- Due to Health & Safety requirements, you must be at least 17 years old and turning 18 by December 2026
We also value (but don’t require):
- STEM projects, competitions, or coursework
- Technical hobbies (DIY, electronics, coding, building or fixing things)
- Work experience, part-time jobs, or volunteering that shows teamwork and responsibility
- Familiarity with basic tools, software, or technical environments
Working Pattern
- Full-time apprenticeship
- Some shift work in line with engineering operations
- Covering night shifts and weekends as required
Why Join Us?
- Earn while gaining a nationally recognised qualification
