FULL JOB DESCRIPTION

The University of Northampton’s Infrastructure Engineer supports and develops the IT infrastructure, working closely with colleagues across IT, the wider university, and thirdparty suppliers. You will be part of the Systems team, helping to maintain reliable, secure infrastructure services and continuously improve systems and processes in line with the university’s digital strategy. 

This is a handson job in a fastpaced educational environment, suitable for someone with technical foundations and a genuine interest in infrastructure technologies. The job provides 2nd and 3rd line support for infrastructure related incidents, service requests, and problems affecting both staff and students. It involves delivering businessasusual activities alongside project work, as assigned by senior engineers and the team manager. 

Responsibilities include deploying, configuring, monitoring, and supporting servers and associated infrastructure systems, while ensuring all environments meet operational policies, standards, and best practice guidelines. The job also requires maintaining accurate and up-to-date technical documentation, including system configurations and processes, and providing infrastructure support across campus locations and remote sites. 

A clear, customerfocused, and nontechnical approach is essential when working with end users. In addition, the job includes managing and supporting hardware, software, inventory, printing services, and monitoring tools, as well as liaising with thirdparty suppliers to ensure equipment and services are delivered and ready on time. 

The working hours are 37 hours per week, with an occasional on call rota, rotated around the team and with some out of hours working requirements.

Work schedule 

The working hours are 37 hours per week, with an occasional on call rota, rotated around the team and with some out of hours working requirements. 

You will have

• Hold a relevant professional level IT qualification or Bachelors / Advanced Degree or equivalent experience

• Evidence of continuing professional development

• ITIL Foundation Certified 

Requirement 

• You have a solid background in IT, supported by a relevant qualification or practical experience, and ideally an ITIL v4 certification. 

• You enjoy working as part of a team and take pride in delivering a high standard of customer service. 

• You are comfortable supporting a diverse user base, including students, academics, and colleagues across the university, and understand the importance of providing clear, friendly, and effective support. 

• You also have handson experience with daytoday operational IT activities, including supporting users, monitoring systems, and troubleshooting incidents, and you approach problems with a calm and practical mindset. 

• You have knowledge and experience in at least 4 of the technologies listed below: 

• Windows Operating Systems 11 

• Windows Server 2019 / 2022 / 2025 

• Active Directory & Group Policy 2019/2022/2025 

• Exchange 365 Online 

• A good knowledge of IT end user devices 

• A good knowledge of Microsoft end user applications 

• A good understanding of the Office 365 Environment 

• Hyper Converged Infrastructures (Storage Spaces) 

• Virtual Infrastructures VMWare, Hyper V, Nutanix 

• A good understanding of file storage, backup and data recovery techniques 

• Knowledge of Service Monitoring (Logic Monitor), and other tools 

• Identity Management (IDM) 

• MS Certificate Services 

• Azure / AWS and AZURE MFA security configuration 

• PowerShell scripting 

• An understanding of the printing process 

• Knowledge and understanding of AI Technologies
