FULL JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Band 6 Clinical Lead to join our acute inpatient mental health service on Rowan Ward 1, based at the Summerlands Site in Yeovil. This is a key leadership role within a busy adult acute psychiatric ward, where you will play a central part in facilitating admissions, ongoing care and safe discharge planning for service users requiring assessment and treatment.
As Clinical Lead, you will lead by example, making fair, timely and balanced clinical decisions with a strong compassion focused mindset. You will champion recovery orientated, person centred care and support a ward culture that promotes dignity, safety and positive patient experience. This role requires confidence, resilience and strong leadership skills, combined with a genuine commitment to supporting both service users and colleagues.
The post holder will work a 24 hour rota, regularly acting as nurse in charge, with additional opportunities for clinical management days to support leadership, supervision and service development.
As a Band 6 Clinical Lead, you will be a senior member of the inpatient multi disciplinary team and take responsibility for overseeing clinical care delivery on the ward. You will provide leadership during shifts, supporting staff through complex clinical situations and ensuring that care is delivered safely, consistently and in line with evidence based practice.
You will play a vital role in developing and empowering Band 5 nurses and other colleagues through supervision, appraisal, mentorship and on shift leadership. You will foster a supportive learning environment where staff feel valued, confident and able to deliver high quality care, while also receiving appropriate supervision and development yourself.
The role includes close collaboration with a range of internal and external professionals to build therapeutic relationships that support recovery and continuity of care. You will contribute to multidisciplinary meetings, discharge planning, risk management and service improvement initiatives, maintaining a clear focus on patient safety, dignity and recovery outcomes.
Working across a 24 hour shift pattern, you will balance direct clinical leadership with opportunities for clinical management activity, supporting the ward manager and wider leadership team. This is a rewarding opportunity for an experienced mental health nurse who is passionate about leadership, compassionate care and making a meaningful difference in an acute inpatient setting.
Your Responsibilities include:
• Lead the clinical coordination of patient care on the ward, ensuring safe, effective admissions and discharges.
• Act as nurse in charge on allocated shifts, providing visible leadership and decisionmaking within the multidisciplinary team.
• Promote recoveryfocused, compassionate and personcentred care across the ward.
• Provide clinical supervision, training and annual appraisals for Band 5 staff nurses and junior colleagues.
• Support the professional development and progression of registered and nonregistered staff while continuing your own development.
• Work collaboratively with medical, psychology, occupational therapy, social care and community services.
• Ensure high standards of care delivery, risk management and safeguarding in line with Trust policies and legislation.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and contribute to audits, quality improvement and service development.
