Are you working as a Renal Technologist or a Medical Engineer with or without renal experience? Are you looking for a new opportunity to bring your skills and knowledge for Continued Professional Development by joining one of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals (UHB NHS Foundation Trust)? If so, we welcome you to apply for this Full Time – Permanent ‘Renal Technologist’ position and join our diverse Renal Directorate that is known nationally to be progressive and dynamic in its multi-disciplinary approach.

You will be joining the ‘Renal Technical Services’ team based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital with excellent training and development opportunities under robust supervision and appraisal systems. Coupled with the opportunity to work alongside highly specialist colleagues and integrate into a variety of specialist renal multi-disciplinary teams.

You will be expected to hold a Degree/HND/HNC level in Electronic Engineering or a related subject. Previous experience of working in either Renal/Medical Engineering or an electro-mechanical service environment would be desirable for a senior Band-6 grade.

If Band-6 in not appointable, candidates with lesser or no experience but who possess the necessary skills/qualifications would be considered alongside for the Band-5 grade, as full training will be provided

Main duties, tasks & skills required

You’ll be responsible for providing a wide range of technical support for haemodialysis machines, water treatment systems, and other associated medical equipment across our hospital dialysis units, satellite units, and home haemodialysis patients in the West Midlands area to ensure compliance to national standards and guidelines.

The successful candidate will also be required to participate in our on call rota to provide a 24hr/365day a year emergency on call service.

You will need to be able to meet the travel requirements of the post and be independently mobile, and as such it is essential for you to possess a full category B car driving licence, preferably clean or with no more than a maximum of 3 points.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to GCSE level in Mathematics and English C/ 4 and above or equivalent.
  • Qualified to degree level in Electronic Engineering or related subject.
  • Appropriate Post-Graduate Diploma or equivalent level experience

Desirable

  • Registered as a Clinical Technologist
  • Member of a Professional Body i.e Association of Renal Technologists (ART), IET or IPEM.

Experience

  • Previous experience of working in an Electro-mechanical service environment
  • An in-depth knowledge and understanding of Mechanical-Electrical-Electronic engineering principals, practices, systems and equipment.
  • Be aware of Health and Safety regulations and work with own safety and that of others in mind
  • Fault finding and repair knowledge
  • Knowledge of safe lifting and handling techniques.
  • Good knowledge of IT software packages (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience of applying them.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working as a Renal Technologist.
  • Knowledge of haemodialysis and related therapies
  • Knowledge of Water treatment system and Quality standards

Additional Criteria

  • You will need to be able to meet the travel requirements of the post and be independently mobile and as such it is essential for you to possess a full category B car driving licence preferably clean or with no more than a maximum of 3 points.
  • Ability to lift and transport equipment and supplies.
